The Department of Military Veterans has gazetted a notice calling for input by 13 July 2025 on draft regulations that – once in force – will formalise the process and procedures to be followed by next of kin applying for and being granted burial support upon the death of a deceased military veteran.
This is noting that:
- in terms of the 2011 Military Veterans Act, benefits and support are available only to those meeting certain criteria
- general benefit regulations in force since February 2014 under the Act include provisions dealing with burial support and will presumably be superseded by what is now envisaged.
Against that backdrop, among other things the proposed new regulations outline:
- criteria determining a military veteran’s eligibility for burial support on death
- the process and procedures to be followed by next of kin and the authorities concerned for:
- burial cost reimbursement, and
- tombstone cost reimbursement, and
- proposed thresholds for the financial support to be made available.
