MINE HEALTH & SAFETY: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS ON AMENDMENT BILL

The National Assembly Committee on Mineral & Petroleum Resources has issued a notice calling for written submissions on the Mine Health & Safety Amendment Bill. The deadline for input is 22 August 2026, with parliamentary hearings likely to follow.
Tabled in April 2026, the Bill seeks to address ‘anomalies’ in the principal statute with the aim of ensuring that it is consistent not only with the prescripts of the 2002 Mineral & Petroleum Resources Development Act but also with the requirements of other relevant legislation.
In that context, among other things the proposed new piece of legislation includes provisions intended to:
- strengthen enforcement measures
- simplify the fine system
- tighten the offences and penalties regime, and
- align administrative processes with the requirements of the 2000 Promotion of Administrative Justice Act.
