MINE-RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION: SET-ASIDE METHODOLOGY OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a notice calling for input by 26 April 2024 on a proposed methodology for calculating the amount to be set aside for environmental rehabilitation following the cessation of low-risk reconnaissance, prospecting, exploration and mining operations.

This is noting the ‘split’ system of financial provisioning proposed in draft regulations released in August 2021 and July 2022 for comment. At the time, a ‘simplified approach’ to set-aside calculations was envisaged for operations meeting the criteria of low-risk mining operations. Apparently, the approach proposed in both sets of draft regulations was ‘reminiscent of the calculation system implemented under the Mineral & Petroleum Resources Development Act’.
