MUNICIPAL POLICING: REVISED STANDARDS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Police has gazetted a notice calling for input by 11 July 2024 on two sets of revised standards for municipal policing. The proposed new standards focus on:

  • arrest procedures and the treatment of an arrested person until handed over to a community service centre commander, and
  • crowd management during gatherings and demonstrations.

The Government Gazette notice includes two non-functioning links to the draft standards, which is why SA Legal Academy chose not to report on the public commentary opportunity at the time. They have since been made available by the Parliamentary Monitoring Group.
