NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEES: PARLIAMENT ANNOUNCES PARTY-SPECIFIC NUMBER OF SEATS

Parliament has issued a media statement on the number of seats allocated to each political party represented in the National Assembly. However, the number of committees themselves and their titles will depend on the composition of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s new Cabinet.

Each yet-to-be-established committee in the National Assembly will comprise:

  • five African National Congress (ANC) representatives
  • three from the Democratic Alliance (DA)
  • two from the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK), and
  • one from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Smaller parties will be allocated four seats in each committee and will decide among themselves who should occupy them.

A separate statement on NCOP committee composition has confirmed that their number has been reduced from 11 to 10, the previous Parliament’s three social development cluster committees having been conflated into two. The election of an NCOP Deputy Chair has been postponed to 2 July 2024.
