NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE COMMISSION CALLS FOR ADJUSTMENT PROPOSALS

Having begun its routine review of the national minimum wage, the Commission has issued a Government Gazette notice calling for written submissions by 8 September 2023 from all interested and affected parties. Input received will inform this year’s report, which may include recommendations for adjustments.

On 1 March 2023, the national minimum wage was increased to R25-42 for every ordinary hour worked. This rate also applies to farm and domestic workers.

In a report published in May 2023, the Commission stated that, ‘in the medium term’, the intention is that the value of the minimum wage ‘should not decline relative to the median wage’.
