NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE: COMMISSION CALLS FOR INPUT ON PROPOSED ADJUSTMENT

The National Minimum Wage Commission has published a report on its latest annual review, which began in August 2023. The report includes a proposed adjustment of 0.75% over and above the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This is noting that the prevailing rate for an ordinary hour of work is R25.42. Stakeholders have until 8 January 2024 to submit written representations.

According to the report, ‘approximately 3.8m workers are covered by the minimum wage’ of whom:

  • 51% are male
  • 87% work full-time
  • 43% are between the ages of 15 and 34
  • 20% work in community and personal services, 19% in trade, 15% in private households and 15% in agriculture, and
  • 49% ‘have an incomplete high school education’.

In the view of the National Economic Development & Labour Council’s organised business constituency, the adjustment ‘should not be beyond the CPI’.
