NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE COMMISSION PROPOSES MEDIUM-TERM TARGET

In terms of sub-section 11(d) of the National Minimum Wage Act, the Commission was given three years from the date of the Act’s commencement to determine a medium-term target for the national minimum wage. The Act came into effect on 1 January 2019.

Against that backdrop, the Commission has issued a Government Gazette notice calling for input by 31 January 2023 on its proposal, which among other things notes the importance of ensuring that ‘the value of the national minimum wage does not decline relative to the median wage’.

The first notice did not set a deadline for input on the target proposed. The notice was replaced four days later with one that includes a deadline for public comments.
