NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE: INPUT SOUGHT ON POSSIBLE ADJUSTMENTS

The National Minimum Wage Commission has called for input by 30 September 2024 on possible adjustments to the national minimum wage. This is in anticipation of making recommendations to the Employment & Labour Minister later this year. These recommendations will also be released for public comment and input factored into a final ministerial determination for 2025/26.

On 1 March 2024, the minimum hourly rate was set at R27.58 and applies to most employees – including farm and domestic workers. On the same date, R15.16 per hour became the minimum rate for expanded public works programme participants, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time. Minimum hourly rates for learnerships, contract cleaners and wholesale and retail workers were set separately.
