In the context of the national payment system, the South African Reserve Bank has issued:
- a discussion document on a policy and regulatory framework for climate change, and
- a consultation paper on cloud computing and data offshoring.
The deadline for input is 15 May 2025.
Both documents explore policy and regulatory framework options noting that:
- the climate change discussion document:
- focuses on climate change-related risks that may negatively impact the national payment system, and
- explores ‘accompanying opportunities’, while
- the cloud computing and data offshoring consultation paper seeks to address:
- challenges in terms of data protection and location, as well as
- operational, reputational, concentration, systemic and cybersecurity risks for payment institutions, operators and the broader national payment system.
