The NCOP Committee on Security & Justice has tabled a report in the House proposing substantive changes to the Electoral Amendment Bill. These are unpacked in a committee media statement and reflected in the Bill's 'B' version. Once endorsed by the NCOP, this version of the Bill will be sent to the National Assembly Committee on Home Affairs for approval.
According to the committee statement, among other things the changes proposed are expected to address concerns raised during the public participation process regarding a 'reverse forfeiture calculation' in the event of a vacancy arising mid-term. In addition, it is propsed that a Electoral Reform Consultation Panel be established to explore the possibility of further amendments to the Act after the 2024 elections.
