NPA BILL PIVOTAL TO IMPLEMENTING ZONDO COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS – PRESIDENCY

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Amendment Bill’s introduction in Parliament during September 2023 was an ‘important milestone’ in the process of strengthening the NPA’s ‘capacity’ to deal with state capture and corruption. This is according to the Presidency’s latest report on progress with implementing recommendations emerging from the Zondo Commission of Inquiry.

Once passed, enacted and operationalised, the Bill will make the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption a ‘permanent feature’ of government’s ‘anti-corruption law enforcement efforts’, the document notes.

On 22 November 2023, the National Assembly’s Justice & Correctional Services Committee completed its work on the Bill and tabled a report in the House on changes reflected in its ‘B’ version.

According to the latest parliamentary programme for the remainder of this year, the committee report and revised Bill are expected to be considered during a plenary session scheduled for 5 December 2023, when the Bill will probably be passed and sent to the NCOP for concurrence.
