NPA INVESTIGATING DIRECTORATE: PEACE OFFICER POWERS GAZETTED

The Department of Justice & Constitutional Development has gazetted a ministerial declaration under the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977:

  • allowing National Prosecuting Authority investigating directorate investigators to exercise certain powers as peace officers when dealing with specific common law and statutory offences, and
  • setting out the criteria to be met and procedures followed when appointing an investigator to the directorate.

‘Serious, high profile or complex cases of corruption’ arising from three commissions of inquiry are included in the list of statutory offences to which the declaration applies.
