NUCLEAR REGULATOR AMENDMENT BILL: KEY OBJECTIVES

The National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill’s overarching objective is to align the Act with International Atomic Energy Agency best practices – among other things by addressing the issue of ‘financial provision for costs associated with safe rehabilitation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities’.

Officially introduced in Parliament on 25 August 2023, according to an explanatory summary of the Bill’s contents it includes proposals that, once operationalised, will provide a ‘regulatory framework for decontaminating, decommissioning and closing national defence force facilities, equipment, machinery and scrap for civilian use’. Although the Bill’s clause 2 deals with this, the issue does not feature in the tabled Bill’s long title.
