OLDER PERSONS AMENDMENT BILL: NCOP PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS BEGINS

The NCOP’s Social Services Committee has called for written submissions by 18 October 2024 on the Older Persons Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version.

Passed by the National Assembly in May 2024, the Bill was sent to the NCOP for concurrence but lapsed when Parliament rose for the national elections.

Since revived, the Bill seeks to address various implementation ‘challenges’ including ‘poor co-ordination and inter-sectoral collaboration’. This is according to a memorandum on its objects, which also notes that the Bill’s overarching purpose is to ensure that older persons receive ‘quality services’ and are ‘afforded the necessary protection’.
