The overarching purpose of a One-stop Boarder Post Bill recently tabled in Parliament is to regulate the establishment of these facilities through international agreements with adjoining countries – among other things on ‘common control zones’ in the territory concerned, where South African criminal law would apply.

In addition, the proposed new piece of legislation provides for a country of departure’s ‘obligation to readmit’ a person, goods, animal or vehicle either refused entry to an adjoining country or found to have entered that country illegally.
The Bill was released in draft form in April 2023 for public comment, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time.
