ONLINE INTERMEDIATION PLATFORM MARKET INQUIRY: NEW DEADLINE GAZETTED

The Competition Commission now has until 30 June 2023 to complete and report on its online intermediation platform market inquiry. A notice announcing this was gazetted on 19 May 2023, the date on which the most recent deadline extension expired.

Launched in May 2021, the inquiry has focused on online services:

  • intermediating transactions between business users and consumers, and
  • generating transaction leads.

These include foreign-based platforms with an economic impact in South Africa – even if they do not have a physical presence in the country.

An interim report published in July 2022 was followed in February 2023 with a call for input on draft guidelines intended to ‘prohibit certain conduct’ by ‘emerging leading platforms’, according to a media statement issued at the time.
