ONLINE INTERMEDIATION PLATFORM MARKET INQUIRY UPDATE

Please note: On 19 April 2023, a backdated notice was gazetted extending the deadline again - to 19 May 2023. The Competition Commission has since issued a media statement on the extension.
The Competition Commission has been given until 18 April 2023 to complete the inquiry and finalise its report. This was announced by notice in the Government Gazette in anticipation of the expiry of the most recent revised deadline, which was set at 28 February 2023.
Focusing on digital platforms intermediating online transactions between businesses and consumers, the inquiry includes foreign-based platforms with an economic impact in South Africa – even if these platforms do not have a physical presence in the country.
