ONLINE INTERMEDIATION PLATFORMS: MARKET INQUIRY REPORT PUBLISHED

The Competition Commission has published a final report on its online intermediation platforms market inquiry, which began in April 2021. No regulatory interventions are recommended at this stage.

Instead, the report proposes specific remedial actions for:

  • Google (search engine)
  • Booking dot-com (travel and accommodation)
  • Takealot (e-commerce)
  • Google Play and Apple App (software applications)
  • Property24, Private Property, Autotrader and Cars dot-coza (online classifieds), and
  • Uber Eats and Mr D (food delivery).

In each of these categories, recommendations are made regarding the removal of barriers to market participation by people from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. To that end, the report calls for government assistance with digital economy start-up funding.

In addition – and in the interests of transparent advertising – it is proposed that local platforms should be required to label all listings where payment has been made for prominent positions or boosted rankings.
