PARLIAMENT: EXECUTIVE MEMBERS’ ETHICS CODE TO BE AMENDED

Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics & Members’ Interests has issued a media statement calling for written submissions by 25 March 2026 on a draft presidential proclamation under the 1998 Executive Members’ Ethics Act. Once in force, the proclamation will amend the July 2000 Executive Members’ Ethics Code – among other things affecting:

  • gifts
  • the disclosure of financial interests, and
  • the register of financial interests (among other things to include the details of any ‘self-propelled’ vehicles used for land, air or water transport).

In addition, the proposed amendments seek to align the 2020 code with the requirements of the 2013 Protection of Personal Information Act.

The term ‘executive member’ is defined in the 2020 code as ‘a Cabinet member, a Deputy Minister or a member of a provincial executive committee’.
