PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS: STOCKHOLM CONVENTION REGULATIONS TO BE CONSOLIDATED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 4 February 2026 on revised draft regulations intended to more effectively meet South Africa’s obligations under the 2001 Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants.

To that end, the proposed new regulations merge two sets separately phasing out and prohibiting the production, distribution, import, export, sale and use of chemicals listed in the Convention. These regulations were respectively gazetted in September 2019 and May 2021. The draft regulations consolidating these two sets also propose phasing out dechlorane plus, UV-328 and perflourohexane sulfonic acid by 2032.
