POLITICAL PARTY FUNDING: PROPOSALS SOUGHT ON UPPER LIMIT, DISCLOSURE RESOLUTION

The National Assembly’s Home Affairs Committee has called for submissions on the formulation of a House resolution on the upper limit of political party donations and related disclosures. The deadline for input is 22 November 2024.

The resolution is required to give effect to a Western Cape High Court ruling on a lacunae in the Electoral Matters Amendment Act, 2024, setting

  • the upper limit of donations per financial year at R15m, and
  • the disclosure limit per financial year at R100 thousand.

As SA Legal Academy has already reported, these amounts featured in sections 7 and 9 of the Political Party Funding Act, 2018, before they were amended by the Electoral Matters Amendment Act, 2024 – which removed the limits when it came into force on 8 May 2024. This is now in the process of being addressed by way of a National Assembly resolution.
