The Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG) has issued a notice drawing attention to proposals for substantive amendments to regulations under the 2001 Private Security Industry Regulation Act. Gazetted on 28 March 2025, the changes envisaged are open until 25 April 2025 for public comments.
The amendments now proposed appear to be underpinned by provisions in the 2000 Firearms Control Act, focusing on conditions in terms of which a private security service provider may issue firearms and ammunition to one of its officers. Among other things the amendments spell out:
It is envisaged that private security service providers will be expected to comply with the proposed new regulations within 180 days of their commencement. Should more time be required, it is proposed that the business concerned should lodge the necessary application within 60 days.
