PUBLIC SERVICE AMENDMENT BILL TABLED

A Bill proposing amendments to the Public Service Act has been tabled in Parliament with the aim of giving effect to:

  • ‘various court decisions’ affecting public administration’, and
  • matters identified in a South African Law Reform Commission report on legislation administered by the Department of Public Service & Administration.

Once enacted and operationalised, among other things the new piece of legislation will:

  • provide for:
    • the devolution of administrative powers to heads of department, and
    • an alternative mechanism for recovering overpaid remuneration and benefits, and
  • clarify the role of the Public Service Commission in respect of grievances.
