PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION: INPUT SOUGHT ON BILL STRENGTHENING INDEPENDENCE, EXTENDING MANDATE

Input is sought by 9 July 2023 on a draft Public Service Commission Administration Bill intended to:

  • strengthen the Commission’s independence as a constitutional institution, and
  • expand its mandate to include local government and state entities.

Among other things, this is expected to respond to an undertaking made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his 2023/24 State of the Nation Address (SONA) regarding:

  • improved basic service delivery, and
  • a professionalised public service.

Once enacted and operationalised, the proposed new piece of legislation will repeal the Public Service Commission Act, 1997.
