RENEWABLE ENERGY: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT MASTERPLAN

Please note: On 2 August 2022, an article on government’s SAnews website announced that the deadline for public comment on the draft masterplan has been extended to 18 August 2028. A backdated media statement confirming this was later issued by the department itself.

The Department of Mineral Resources & Energy issued a media statement calling for input by 31 July 2023 on a draft masterplan for renewable energy.

According to the statement, the document outlines ‘an action plan for South Africa to tap into opportunities linked to the booming market for renewable energy and battery storage technologies, both domestically and globally’.

To that end – and given the country’s ‘supply-side capabilities’ – the draft masterplan focuses on solar energy, wind energy, lithium-ion battery and vanadium-based battery technologies. The intention is to ‘unlock the industrial and inclusive development of associated value chains’ nationwide.

As other technologies ‘mature’ and local ‘industrial capabilities’ are developed, they will be included in ensuing masterplan iterations. In that regard, the document’s introductory section expressly refers to offshore wind and rechargeable alkaline batteries.

The draft masterplan builds on a version released in March 2022 for public comment and is underpinned by ‘an extensive research and stakeholder engagement process’.
