SAA ACT: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT REPEAL BILL

A draft Bill seeking to repeal the South African Airways Act, 2007, has been gazetted for public comment – with 15 October 2023 as the deadline for input.

This follows Cabinet’s approval of the move, which responds to recent developments in terms of which government is ‘longer … majority stakeholder’ in the airline.

According to a media statement on the Cabinet meeting at which the draft Bill was approved for release into the public domain, the Act’s likely repeal will not ‘change the continued corporate existence of the company’. The intention is that, on behalf of the state, a ‘designated shareholder representative’ will exercise the rights attached to government shares in the airline.

The most recent Department of Public Enterprises media statement on SAA was issued in July 2023 – welcoming the Competition Commission’s approval of ‘the Takatso Consortium’s proposed purchase of a 51% shareholding’ in the airline.
