SABC BILL HEADS TO PARLIAMENT

Please note: On 3 October 2023, the Parliamentary Monitoring Group published the draft Bill on its website.

The Department of Communication & Digital Technologies has gazetted an explanatory summary of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) SOC Ltd Bill, which it has undertaken to table in Parliament before the end of this year.

Approved by Cabinet during its 28 September 2023 meeting, according to a media statement issued at the time – once passed, enacted and operationalised – the Bill is expected to:

  • ‘strengthen the efficiency of the operations of the public broadcaster’
  • reform its funding model, and
  • also reform the TV licensing system.

At the time of writing, the Bill had yet to be published either on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group website or the department’s – despite claims to the contrary in the notice concerned.
