SABC SOC LTD BILL: PARLIAMENTARY PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS BEGINS

The National Assembly’s Communications & Digital Technologies Committee has called for written submissions by 15 December 2023 on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) SOC Ltd Bill. This is in anticipation of parliamentary hearings in 2024, once MPs return from the long festive season break.

Tabled in October 2023, among other things the Bill provides for:

  • regulating the SAB’s ‘continued existence’, and
  • its ‘proper governance’.

A media statement on the Cabinet meeting at which the Bill was approved also refers to provisions intended to ‘reform’ the SABC’s ‘funding model’, as well as the TV licensing system.
