The Department of Transport has called for stakeholder submissions by 23 July 2023 on processes apparently already under way for ratifying two international conventions affecting transport by sea:
- the 1965 Convention on Facilitating International Maritime Traffic, and
- the 2020 Convention on Marine Aids to Navigation.
According to the department:
- the overarching objective of the Convention on Facilitating International Maritime Traffic is to ‘prevent unnecessary delays’ by:
- facilitating co-operation between governments, and
- securing ‘the highest practicable degree of uniformity in formalities and … other procedures’, while
- the overarching objective of the Convention on Marine Aids to Navigation is to foster the safe and efficient movement of vessels across the world’s oceans.
