SEA TRANSPORT: SOUTH AFRICA CONSIDERS RATIFYING TWO CONVENTIONS

The Department of Transport has called for stakeholder submissions by 23 July 2023 on processes apparently already under way for ratifying two international conventions affecting transport by sea:

  • the 1965 Convention on Facilitating International Maritime Traffic, and
  • the 2020 Convention on Marine Aids to Navigation.

According to the department:

  • the overarching objective of the Convention on Facilitating International Maritime Traffic is to ‘prevent unnecessary delays’ by:
    • facilitating co-operation between governments, and
    • securing ‘the highest practicable degree of uniformity in formalities and … other procedures’, while
  • the overarching objective of the Convention on Marine Aids to Navigation is to foster the safe and efficient movement of vessels across the world’s oceans.
