SERVICE DELIVERY: DIGITALISATION ROADMAP PUBLISHED

A recently published ‘roadmap’ for digitally transforming government is a ‘significant step in reshaping how citizens access essential services’. This is according to Communications & Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi, whose department issued a media statement welcoming the move.

Among other things, the roadmap is underpinned by government’s ongoing commitment to delivering integrated public services safely, securely, and seamlessly. To that end, it outlines initiatives intended to facilitate essential documentation acquisition along with access to medical and similarly important records.

In a foreword to the roadmap, President Cyril Ramaphosa notes that, over time, road map implementation is expected to:

  • reduce the time and cost of accessing public services
  • end administrative process duplication
  • modernise systems ‘incompatible with the digital age’, and
  • align service delivery with ‘evolving expectations’.

In particular, South Africa’s low income communities and rural dwellers are set to benefit from a digitally transformed government.

The President would like to see public servants ‘work(ing) together … across departments … (and) spheres of government … to deliver services differently.’ In his view, they will need to do so with ‘improved co-ordination, greater urgency and a shared (sense of) responsibility’ if ‘efficient and seamless government services’ are to become the norm.
