SIGN LANGUAGE BILL: ONE MORE LEG OF THE PARLIAMENTARY PROCESS TO GO

Parliament has issued a media statement confirming that, on 2 May 2023, the National Assembly passed the Constitution 18th Amendment Bill. It will now be considered by the NCOP Committee on Security & Justice.

Introduced in January 2023, once in force the Bill will finally make South African Sign Language one of the country’s official languages.

According to a report to the House tabled in March by its Justice & Correctional Services Committee, no amendments were deemed necessary. The committee process included public hearings, with more likely to follow in the NCOP.

Among other things, Parliament’s statement on the Bill alluded to the possibility of consequential amendments to other pieces of legislation but did not elaborate.
