SIGN LANGUAGE: CONSTITUTION 18th AMENDMENT ACT IN FORCE

According to a recently gazetted presidential proclamation, the 2023 Constitution 18th Amendment Act is now in force – adding South African sign language to the Constitution section 6 list of official languages.

The Act also removes the explicit reference to South African sign language from Constitution sub-section 6(5)(a) – which now requires the Pan South African Language Board to ‘promote, and create conditions for, the development and use of all official languages … (as well as) the Khoi, Nama and San languages’.
