SOCIAL GRANTS: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT REGULATORY AMENDMENTS

Shortly before close of business on 31 August 2026, the Department of Social Development gazetted draft amendments to regulations in place since May 2022 under the 2004 Social Assistance Act, focusing on grant applications and payments – calling for comments by 30 September 2026.

The changes envisaged have implications for:

  • the documents to accompany a social grant application
  • application outcome notification
  • the payment of a reduced social grant to someone ‘maintained in a certain institution’
  • the Social Security Agency of South Africa’s power to suspend, increase or decrease the amount of a grant on review
  • the lapsing of a social grant, per category, and
  • social grant payments to beneficiaries absent from South Africa.
