SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS GRANT INCREASE GAZETTED

Please note: On 26 March 2024, the department issued a media statement among other things drawing attention to the grant’s positive impact since being introduced.
The Department of Social Development has gazetted a notice increasing the monthly social relief of distress grant from R350 to R370. Reportedly announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on 14 March in the National Assembly (SAnews), the increase will come into effect on 1 April 2024 and will remain in force until 31 March 2025.
In addition, the notice makes further amendments to regulations in place since April 2022, affecting:
- the recovery of grant money paid in error
- the availability of uncollected benefits, and
- the final payment following the death of a grant beneficiary.
The amendments were released in draft form in February 2024 for public comment.
