The Department of Social Development has gazetted a notice calling for input on proposals for continuing the temporary social relief of distress grant’s availability until 31 March 2027. The deadline for comments is 4 March 2026.
Increased to R370 per month from 1 April 2025, the grant has been in place since the Covid-19 pandemic. It is not clear when the ‘new policy’ now featured on the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) website was introduced. However, a recent departmental media statement has since confirmed that no amendments have been made to the regulations gazetted in 2022. They include the qualifying criteria to be met by grant applicants.
The notice calling for input on the latest proposals was published well after normal business hours on 11 February 2026 and backdated.
