SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS GRANT REGULATIONS: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT AMENDMENTS

The Department of Social Development has gazetted draft amendments to the social relief of distress grant regulations – calling for public comments by 6 March 2024.

In addition to extending the availability of the R350 monthly grant to qualifying beneficiaries for another year, the amendments envisaged seek to provide for:

  • the recovery of monies from anyone who was either not entitled to benefit from the grant or who benefitted ‘irregularly’
  • the cancellation of applications made by untraceable persons or those whose contact and other details have changed
  • the discontinuation of grant payments to diseased persons within a specified period of time, and
  • related transitional arrangements.
