SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS: UNEXPECTED GRANT INCREASE IN FORCE

The Department of Social Development has gazetted amendments to the Covid-19 social relief of distress grant in place since April 2022. Immediately effective, the amended regulations increase the monthly grant by R20 (twenty rand). This is noting that the increase:

  • applies:
    • retrospectively from 1 April 2025, and
    • only to grants authorised between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2026
  • will remain in force until 31 March 2026, and that
  • the circumstances in which grant beneficiaries find themselves will be routinely reassessed, in keeping with the relevant regulatory requirements.

Released in draft form in March 2025 for public comment, at the time the amendments proposed did not include any change in the grant itself. Neither did the social relief of distress grant feature among state funded benefits earmarked for an increase in the 2025/26 Budget.
