SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS GRANT INCREASE IN FORCE

Please note: On 25 April 2025, National Treasury issued a media statement reversing its decision to increase the value added tax rate. It is therefore not clear if changes in the social relief of distress grant regulations will remain in place.
The Department of Social Development has gazetted amendments to the Covid-19 social relief of distress grant regulations in place since April 2022. Immediately effective, the amended regulations increase the monthly grant by R20 (twenty rand). This is noting that the increase:
- applies:
- retrospectively from 1 April 2025, and
- only to grants authorised between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2026
- will remain in force until 31 March 2026, and that
- the circumstances in which grant beneficiaries find themselves will be routinely reassessed, in keeping with the relevant regulatory requirements.
Released in draft form in March 2025 for public comment, the amendments were proposed in the context of an immenent increase in the value added tax rate.
