SOUTH AFRICAN POST OFFICE AMENDMENT BILL TABLED

The intention of a South African Post Office SOC Ltd Amendment Bill tabled in Parliament on 11 May 2023 is to:

  • ‘expand’ the mandate of the South African Post Office (SAPO), diversifying its role
  • ‘repurpose’ its infrastructure and optimise associated opportunities for value-add and stakeholder relationship building
  • improve the SAPO governance structure, and
  • provide for the appointment and functions of a stamp advisory committee.

This is according to a memorandum on the objects of the Bill, which was released in draft form last year for public comment.

A media statement on the November 2022 Cabinet meeting at which the Bill was approved for tabling refers to ‘enabl(ing) the SAPO to adapt to … technological developments in the courier-service space’.
