SPECTRUM ASSIGNMENT: REGULATIONS FOR THREE BANDS GAZETTED, WITH REASONS DOCUMENT

Please note: On 13 April (nearly two weeks after gazetting the new regulations) ICASA issued a media statement explaining their significance in 'making sufficient spectrum available to licensees, on a technology-neutral basis, in order to enable the rollout and uptake of 4G and 5G services across South Africa'.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has gazetted radio frequency spectrum assignment regulations for the following bands, with a reasons document explaining the rationale for each decision:

  • 450-470 MHz (IMT 450)
  • 825-830 MHz and 870-875 MHz (IMT 850), and
  • 1247-1518 MHz (IMT 1500)

The regulations follow an inquiry into radio frequency migration plan options and related roadmaps apparently begun in 2021.

  • Government Gazette notice (reasons document and regulations)
