STATE OF DISASTER (ENERGY SUPPLY): COMMUNICATIONS & DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES MINISTER ISSUES DIRECTIVE

Communications & Digital Technologies Minister Mondli Gungubele has directed the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to ‘urgently consider’ interventions outlined in a Government Gazette notice that is apparently immediately in force. This is with the aim of ‘effectively’ dealing with energy supply constraints and ‘where applicable’ preventing their ‘escalation’.

The proposed interventions include consulting licensees regarding:

  • ‘the granting of exemptions from load-shedding or reduced load shedding’
  • ‘the degree to which compliance with regulatory obligations … is dependent upon access to a consistent electricity supply’, and
  • with that in mind, ‘regulatory obligations that could be relaxed’.
