STATISTICS AMENDMENT BILL: FINAL OPPORTUNITY FOR SUBMISSIONS

The NCOP’s Health & Social Services Committee has called for written submissions by 15 April 2024 on a ‘B’ version of the Statistics Amendment Bill, which was passed by the National Assembly on 27 February 2024.

This is noting that, according to the latest parliamentary programme, the NCOP and its committees will only rise on 21 May 2024 for the general elections. In all likelihood, the Bill will have been passed by then and sent to the President for signature.

The Bill’s overarching objective is to provide for the development and implementation of:

  • a national statistics system, and
  • a strategy for:
    • strengthening co-ordination mechanisms and collaboration among data producers and data users, and
    • fostering compliance with norms, standards and methodologies for data collection.

Once operationalised, the national statistics system is expected to ensure the availability of quality statistics for planning, policy formulation, monitoring and evaluation, and evidence-based decision-making.
