STATISTICS AMENDMENT BILL: PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS BEGINS

The National Assembly’s Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Committee has called for written submissions by 24 November 2023 on the Statistics Amendment Bill, possibly in anticipation of parliamentary hearings.

Tabled in October 2023, once passed, enacted and operationalised this proposed new piece of legislation is expected to ‘strengthen co-ordination and enhance collaboration amongst data producers and data users by creating an enabling environment for the production and consumption of quality statistics’. This is according to a memorandum on the Bill’s objects.

To that end, among other things provision is made for the development and implementation of a ‘national strategy’ and ‘national statistics system’.
