STATISTICS AMENDMENT BILL READY FOR SECOND READING AND REFERRAL TO NCOP

The National Assembly’s Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Committee has issued an erroneous media statement on the status of the Statistics Amendment Bill. Having concluded its work on the Bill and agreed to further changes, the committee has tabled a report in the House in anticipation of a second reading of the Bill when Parliament reconvenes next year.

If the Bill is passed by the National Assembly – which will probably be the case – it will be sent to the NCOP for concurrence. It will not be sent to the President for signature until it has been passed by the NCOP. If the NCOP proposes changes to the Bill, these will need to be considered and endorsed by the National Assembly.

Tabled in October 2023, the Statistics Amendment Bill’s overarching objective is to ‘strengthen co-ordination and enhance collaboration amongst data producers and data users by creating an enabling environment for the production and consumption of quality statistics’.

A ‘B’ version of the Bill incorporating amendments made by the committee is not yet available.
