STEEL MARKET INQUIRY TERMS OF REFERENCE OUT FOR COMMENT

Please note: On 14 April 2023, the Competition Commission issued a backdated media statement explaining the rationale for its inquiry - a week after the draft terms of reference were gazetted for public comment.
The Department of Trade, Industry & Competition has called for input by 5 May 2023 on draft terms of reference for a Competition Commission inquiry into the steel market. Focusing on raw materials/input pricing and upstream steel production, among other things the inquiry will explore market concentration and the barriers to entry and expansion. In that context, the challenges facing emerging iron ore miners will also be unpacked.
The notice calling for input was gazetted on 11 April 2023 and backdated by four days.
