SUBSCRIPTION TV: COMPETITION ‘EFFECTIVE’, BUT – ICASA

Following an inquiry into the subscription television market, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has gazetted a supplementary discussion document concluding that – while competition was found to be ‘effective’ – this is a ‘preliminary view’ open to further input from stakeholders and members of the general public. However, no deadline has been provided.

According to the document:

  • the authority’s preliminary view applies to the wholesale market for premium sport, movies and series content, as well as non-premium content, and
  • new ‘over-the-top’ market entrants ‘have continued to grow their market share despite not having access to premium sports’.
