The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture has published the national policy on theatre and dance approved by Cabinet in August 2023. According to an accompanying media statement, it is expected to ‘breathe new energy’ into the process of ‘transforming and repositioning’ South Africa’s broader creative sector.
Possibly in that context, a press release on the Cabinet meeting at which the policy was approved refers to ‘institutionalised inequalities and disparities’ affecting ‘economic access’ along racial lines.
Underpinned by the 2019 revised White Paper on Arts, Culture & Heritage, the policy includes a ‘detailed implementation plan’ among other things alluding to regulatory interventions intended to address issues related to gender, ‘transparency’, ‘information dissemination’, and adherence to minimum standards.
In addition, reference is made to the establishment of an ombud to deal with ‘contractual issues’ and ‘the rights of artists and practitioners’.
