Three more Acts have been added to the statute books, the Bills concerned having been signed into law. At the time of writing, only the National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill’s enactment appeared to have been deemed worthy of a Presidency media statement.
According to that statement, once operationalised the National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Act will strengthen ‘nuclear safety oversight’, in line with prevailing International Atomic Energy Agency determined regulatory best practice. Among other things, particular attention will be paid to the ‘decontamination, decommissioning and closing of national defence force facilities … for civilian use’ – with implications for affected equipment, machinery and scrap. Existing measures intended to ensure ‘airline pilot safety’ will also be improved.
Once in force, the Plant Health (Phytosanitary) Act is expected to close gaps and address challenges in the prevailing phytosanitary system in order to meet the requirements of South Africa’s major trading partners – as well as those of various related international agreements and treaties to which South Africa is signatory.
It is anticipated that, when operationalised, the Statistics Amendment Act will facilitate more effective co-ordination and collaboration amongst data producers and data users ‘by creating an enabling environment for the production and consumption of quality statistics’. This is according to a memorandum on the objects of the Bill now signed into law.
Parliament passed all three Bills shortly before rising for the May 2024 general elections.
