TOURISM SECTOR MASTER PLAN PUBLISHED

The tourism sector master plan approved by Cabinet on 27 September 2023 has been gazetted. According to a post-Cabinet meeting media statement issued at the time, the plan includes a road map for the tourism sector’s ‘full recovery’ from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic – taking the work of the April 2021 recovery plan to ‘another level’ by facilitating ‘new opportunities in the sector’. This is noting that the recovery plan’s overarching objective was to ‘preserve jobs and protect livelihoods’.

The master plan focuses on seven key interventions:

  • ‘enhancing education and skills development’
  • ‘promoting entrepreneurship and economic growth’
  • ‘improving infrastructure and connectivity’
  • ‘fostering social cohesion and well-being’
  • ‘preserving the environment and natural resources’
  • ‘strengthening governance and institutions’, and
  • ‘promoting regional cooperation’.

Its implementation will be ‘supported’ by three ‘enablers’:

  • ‘targeted, strategic partnerships between government and industry’
  • inter-departmental partnerships to facilitate travel through:
    • access to e-visas, and
    • improved tourist safety and ‘airlift capacity’, and
  • quicker tour operator licence application processing.
