TRADITIONAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS ACT: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT REGISTRATION REGULATIONS

The Government Communications & Information System’s official voice, SAnews, has drawn attention to draft regulations on the registration of  traditional health practitioners. Gazetted on 21 June for public comment, at the time the deadline for input was three months from that date.

According to a recent SAnews article on the proposed new regulations, they:

  • follow a review of draft regulations released in November 2015 for public comment, and
  • once in force are expected to usher in ‘a new dawn for the recognition and professionalisation of … traditional health practice’.

On 1 May 2014, section 4 of the Traditional Health Practitioner’s Act, 2007, came into effect – establishing an Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council. While most sections of the Act are now in force, as far as can be ascertained two have yet to be commenced: sections 5 (objects of the council) and 13 (the council’s executive committee).
